Abstract:

1968 generalized Geological map of Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan Counties, West Virginia.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data theme is to provide local conservation organizations, state natural resource agencies, local government, higher education institutions and all interested parties digital spatial information on the location and distribution geologic features within the boundaries of Jefferson County, West Virginia

Process Step

Process Description:

This data set (wvgeol.zip) was obtained from the West Virginia GIS Tec Center, West Virginia University, Morgan Town , West Virginia. The state wide geology theme was originally provided as an ArcInfo .E00 file in the Universal Transverse Mercator map projection, Zone 17, North American Datum of 1983. For more detail information on the geology theme see the online linkage above.
Once the theme was unzipped the coverage converted into an ArcView shapefile using the Import71 utility. The shapfile was added to an existing ArcView 3.2 project and display into a new view. The theme was then unprojected to decimal degrees using ArcView's projection utility wizard and the new theme renamed. The newly transformed geology theme was brought into the existing view and displayed. Polygon boundary themes for Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties were added to the view. The county themes were overlaid on top of the geology layer. Next the geology theme was clipped using geopressing wizard with each county boundary theme. The clip resulted in three new individual geology shapefiles (geo_jeff, geo_berk, geo_morg) for each county.
