Description

Abstract:

This point data theme shows the location of national registered historical sites /land marks within the boundaries of Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan Counties, West Virginia.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data theme is to provide local conservation organizations, state natural resource agencies, local government, higher education institutions and all interested parties digital spatial information on the location of national historical sites within the boundaries of Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties, West Virginia.

Process Step

Process Description:

This Arcview point data set (GIS_basemap_nhs-utm.zip) was obtained from the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection website. The original data set included the location of national historical sites for the entire state of West Virginia. The theme was provided in the Universal Transversal Mercator (UTM) map projection, Zone 17, North American Datum of 1927.

Once the data was downloaded and unzipped it was brought into an existing ArcView 3.2 project and the theme displayed. The point theme was unprojected from a UTM map projection to decimal degrees and transformed to the North American Datum of 1983 (NADCOM transformation) using ArcView's 3.2 map projection utility wizard. Once the transformation was complete a new shapefile was created and renamed Nhs.shp

After the points where transformed, Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan county boundary polygon themes were added to the view along with the newly created shapefile. All the historical sites that fell with the county boundaries were selected with the selection tool and converted into a new shapefile. This resulted in a new theme with only the historical sites that were contained within the three counties.
