Project Impact is a Federal Emergency Management Agency initiative to help communities to become disaster resistant in the pre-disaster time frame.  Jefferson County, WV was named a Project Impact Community in 2001.

Jefferson County Project Impact will carry out an initiative aimed at bringing greater emphasis and improved focus to activities that the Jefferson County Community can take to reduce their vulnerability to natural disaster losses.  The principal purpose of the funds awarded under the Project Impact Grant is to have a GIS-based risk and vulnerability assessment and all hazards mitigation plan prepared that, when implemented, will encourage projects that will reduce the existing risk of natural hazard losses within the geographic location of Jefferson County.  Mitigation measures generally are those projects and actions that reduce in a permanent or long-term manner, the potential losses from natural hazard events before the hazard occurs.  This is in contrast to measures that prepare for and respond to natural hazard events after the disaster happens.

This initiative will be carried out through the framework of Building Partnerships, Education and Training, Assessing Risks, and Mitigation Planning.
