The Office of Emergency Management is responsible for the development of emergency operations for the purpose of disaster preparedness, prevention, and recovery, with the intent of minimizing destruction and/or injury caused by natural or manmade disasters.
The primary responsiblity for emergency management activities such as:
Mitigation
Mitigation activites are those designed to either prevent the occurrence of an emergency or long-term activities to minimize the potential effects of an emergency.
Preparedness
Preparedness activities, programs and systems are those that exist prior to an emergency or disaster.
Response
Response activities and programs are designed to react to the immediate and short-tem effects of an emergency or disaster. It helps to reduce casualites and damage and to speed recovery. Response activities include direction and control, warning evacuation and other similar operations.
Recovery
Recovery is the phase that involves restoring systems to normal. Short term recovery actions are taken to assess damage and return vital life support systems to minimum operating standards. Long - term recovery actions may continue for many years.
