Process Step
Process Description:
This data set (wv.zip) was obtained from the National STATSGO Database, Data Access web site through West Virginia GIS Tec Center, West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. The state wide soils coverage was provided as an ArcInfo 7.0 coverage in the Albers Conic Equal Area map projection, North American Datum of 1927. For more detailed information on the Soils metadata and soils attribute information see the online linkage above.
Once the theme was downloaded, it was unzipped and the coverage converted into a shapefile using the ArcView 3.2 Import71 conversion utility. The converted coverage was added to an existing ArcView 3.2 project and displayed into a new view. The new theme was then unprojected to decimal degrees and converted to the North American Datum 1983 using ArcView's projection utility wizard and the new theme renamed. The newly transformed state soils theme was brought into the existing view and displayed. Polygon boundary themes for Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties were added to the view. The county themes were overlaid on top of the soils theme. Next, the state wide soils theme was clipped using geopressing wizard with each county boundary theme. The clip resulted in three new individual soils shapefiles (berk_soils.shp, morg_soils.shp, jeff_soils.shp) for each county in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
