Abstract:

This point data theme shows the location of Federal CERCLIS (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Information System) sites within the boundaries of Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data theme is to provide digital spatial information

to assist in the development of a hazard mitigation and

assessment plan for Jefferson County, West Virginia Project Impact.

Process Step

Process Description:

This Arcview point data set (GIS_environ_federal_cerclis.zip) was obtained from the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection website. The original data set included the location of federal contaminants sites for the entire state of West Virginia. The theme was provided in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) map projection, Zone 17, North American Datum of 1927.
Once the data was downloaded and unzipped it was brought into an existing ArcView 3.2 project and the theme displayed. The point theme was unprojected from a UTM map projection to decimal degrees and transformed to the North American Datum of 1983 (NADCOM transformation) using ArcView's 3.2 map projection utility wizard. Once the transformation was complete a new shapefile was created and renamed.

After the points were transformed, Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan county boundary polygon themes were added to the view along with the newly created shapefile. All the contaminants sites that fell within the county boundaries were selected with the selection tool and converted into a new shapefile. This resulted in a new theme with only the contaminant sites that were contained within the three counties.
