The Sheriff is the treasurer of the County. As treasurer, the responsibilities entail both the collection and disbursement of County money. The Sheriff also collects and disburses property taxes to the county Board of Education and each municipality or levying body within the county.
The Sheriff maintains and reconciles county government bank accounts and monthly financial statements of all collections and disbursements. At the close of each fiscal year, the sheriff is required to make a final settlement of all accounts in each fund.
The Sheriff holds a tax lien sale each November for delinquent real estate taxes. Additional duties include preparing and publishing property tax deliquent lists, notifying owners and lien holders of delinquent property taxes, paying all jurors and witnesses for circuit and magistrate costs and processing current West Virginia Department of the Motor Vehicle license renewals. Also, the Sheriff is Conservator of Last Resort for persons deemed to be protected persons by the Courts. In this capacity, the Sheriff manages the protected person's finances.
