CHARLES TOWN, WV (November 24, 2025) – The Jefferson County Commission has officially begun the interior buildout at the 393 North Lawrence Street government building, starting with the construction of the new Jefferson County Clerk’s Office. This marks a major milestone in the County’s multi-year government facilities plan and the first step toward transforming the building into a centralized hub for county operations.

At last Thursday’s meeting, the Commission approved the layout and authorized construction of the County Clerk’s space, which will be the first County department to occupy the renovated building. While buildout plans for the remaining suites are still being finalized, the Commission moved forward with the Clerk’s space to ensure she and her staff are in place ahead of the 2026 primary election. The transition positions the Clerk’s Office in a modern, accessible space that supports election preparation and improved public service.

The Commission celebrated this milestone by joining the County Clerk and members of her staff for a ceremonial “groundbreaking” inside the new suite—symbolically marking the start of construction.

The Clerk is expected to relocate into the new office by March 2026, after which construction on the remaining departmental suites will begin. All County Commission offices and departments are anticipated to be fully moved into the 393 building by the end of 2026, supporting the County’s long-term plan to centralize services, modernize operations, and improve organizational efficiency.
