Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended protects applicants and employees from discrimination in hiring, promotion, discharge, pay, fringe benefits, job training, classification, referral, and other aspects of employment, on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), or national origin.  Religious discrimination includes failing to reasonably accommodate an employee's religious practices where the accommodation does not impose undue hardship.  and the West Virginia human rights commission.  Jefferson County also protects those with disabilities, employees age 40 years or older from discrimination, sexual discrimination and genetic discrimination.
All of these federal laws prohibit covered entities such as Jefferson County from retaliating against a person who files a charge of discrimination, participates in discrimination, or otherwise opposes an unlawful employment practice.
If you feel there is an issue with discrimination, please see Jefferson County Policies and Procedures on the County's website to complete an Issue Resolution Form.  Please completed and submit to your Elected Official or the County Administrator.

Planning Internship – Jefferson County Office of Planning and Zoning

Overview:

Full Time – Temporary Position (~May 2026 - August 2026) 

Jefferson County is seeking a motivated, reliable, and innovative individual who can perform writing and research with public presentation functions. This is an exciting opportunity for a student to gain work experience in a local government environment with a focus on a critical ongoing project. The position will be primarily focused on working with staff in creating amendments to the land division ordinances. The internship will include preparing reports and presenting to the Planning Commission.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Internship ideally suited for individual pursuing degree in Public Administration, GIS, Planning and Zoning, Geography, Environmental Science, or Political Science.

Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Strong organizational and record keeping skills, as well as time management skills are required. Effective research, written and verbal communication skills are critical.

Special Requirements: Employee will be required to work beyond normal business hours to attend occasional regularly scheduled evening meetings and additional meetings as needed and requested by the Chief County Planner, County Planner, or Director.

Pay: $17.50/hr., 35 hrs. per week, Monday-Friday

  • Please note this is a temporary position that begins mid-May 2026 through August 2026. Starting/ending dates are flexible.
