Rabies Vaccinations

WV Code Chapter 19, Article 20A establishes rabies vaccination procedure for dogs and cats and to check the spread of rabies for the immediate preservation of life, health, and safety. Among other points, the law stipulates that "Whoever owns, keeps, or harbors a dog or cat within boundaries of any county in the state of West Virginia shall, on or before the first day of June, one thousand nine hundred eighty-seven, have such dog or or cat properly vaccinated or immunized against rabies with a vaccine capable of producing immunity for two years and shall every second year thereafter have such dog or cat re-vaccinated with a vaccine capable of producing immunity for two years."

WV Law requires the assessor to collect license fees on all dogs who are or who will be 6 months of age or older by June 30 of the following year. Dog licenses must be renewed annually. For more information about licenses, visit the Jefferson County Assessor's website.
